MUMBAI: Desperate attempts to win over farmers, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday was forced to announce farm loan waiver in the state even as farmers are hell-bent to continue their agitation over a slew of demands that includes debt write-off.
Late in the evening, Fadnavis took to Twitter to declare the government’s decision to appoint a high-level committee to delve into various modalities of the loan waiver scheme.
“We have roped in representatives of farmers to make sure maximum coverage,” he said.
He said that the BJP-led government in Maharashtra is pulling all stops to live up to the late BJP leader Gopinath Munde’s dream of serving poor farmers. The loan waiver was implemented to provide economic relief to debt-ridden farmers, he tweeted.
Fadnavis said that his government is working hard to offer all available economic and infrastructure solutions to farmers by ensuring power supply, irrigation facilities, soaps for the processing industry and group farming.
The loan waiver announcement made by Fadnavis came after a number of farmers’ organisations continued their uprising in many parts of the state as the state government miserably failed to implement anything concrete for farmers.
